SNK announces King will return in KOF XV

By Karl SmartApril 1, 2021

SNK announced the official addition of King. King enters KOF XV as the 12th announced character.

King is the latest fighter to be officially confirmed for the upcoming fighting game. King specializes in Muay Thai and excels at assaulting enemies with aerial attacks. Naturally, SNK still has multiple playable characters to announce and fans have been eagerly awaiting new character announcement videos from the company’s official YouTube channel. You can see King’s official announcement video below.

Debuting in Art of Fighting before making a move to Team England in King of Fighters 1994, King is one of the primary members of the all-female team that has been continuing from the very first game through to the modern-day. King’s story includes hints of working for Mr. Big in Art of Fighting as a bartender, to her trying to make an honest living and saving to pay for her younger brother’s surgery to regain use of his legs. While official media has dictated that her fighting style is Muay Thai, there are hints of Korean kickboxing style Kun Gek Do and French Savate mixed in there too, a homage to her European background.

Loyal fans of the KOF franchise started waiting for the new game when it was first teased in late 2019. SNK hinted that development on a new sequel was in the works via a simple logo. It would not be until January 2020 that players finally got the confirmation for King of Fighters XV. Additionally, SNK scheduled the game for a release date sometime in 2021. It took them five years since the release of KOF XIV but fighting game players will soon have a new game to play.

Players can expect more fighter reveal videos in the coming weeks up until SNK finally drops an official release date. Unfortunately, KOF XV’s release preceded any announcements for EVO 2021 Online. The upcoming fighting game won’t be included in the lineup of games for this year’s EVO tournament. The online-only tournament will feature matches in Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Strive, Mortal Kombat 11, and Street Fighter V: Champion Edition.

SNK made no announcements about any potential future KOF XV tournament. Hopefully, next year, we’ll be able to see King of Fighter XV among the greatest titles in EVO 2022.
