HBO Max heads to Roku Tomorrow

By Keith MitchellDecember 16, 2020

Just in time for Wonder Woman 84 to arrive on HBO Max

Good news, Roku smart TV device owners (and you to TCL tv owners); HBO Max is heading to the Roku platform. And you won’t have to wait long, as the service will be available starting tomorrow. This comes seven months after the service was launched. It’s still kind of mind-blowing that HBO Max wasn’t available for Roku, one of the largest streaming platforms in the world.

The news was just announced moments ago via a playful banter between the Roku and HBO Max Twitter accounts.

It would seem that HBO and Roku have reached an agreeable decision, which is now finally bringing the service over to Roku. Much to the delight of Roku users everywhere.

“HBO Max is an incredible product with an unparalleled content offering that puts the consumer at the center, and we’re thrilled that Roku users will be able to experience all the great stories HBO Max has to offer,” said Tony Goncalves, Chief Revenue Officer, WarnerMedia. “We’re breaking new ground in the months ahead, and we can’t wait to work with our longtime partners at Roku to build on our past successes and bring HBO Max’s best-in-class quality entertainment to Roku’s large and highly engaged audience.”

Things had been at a stalemate for HBO Max and Roku, the company responsible for a number of Roku TV devices and the very same smart device that’s available on TCL TVs. HBO Max, one of the hottest streaming services, thanks to the merging of DC Universe’s properties, is set to stream all of Warner Bro. upcoming movies throughout 2021. This includes the upcoming Wonder Woman 84′ which will air on HBO on Christmas day, an entire year, as the movie was originally scheduled for a December 2019 release.

So when owners of Roku devices found out that the service wasn’t available on Roku, it upset them, myself included, as I own several TCL TVs. While we couldn’t get access to HBO programming, we had to do so via YouTube TV or another service, and we missed out on HBO Max content. Thankfully, that’s all over!

Existing users who subscribe to HBO will gain access to HBO Max, no word if it will use the same app or if a new one will be needed to download.
