Does history repeat in Final Fantasy 7 Remake for Jessie, Biggs and Wedge?

By Keith MitchellApril 17, 2020

I’ve finally wrapped up my Final Fantasy 7 Remake playthrough after 40-ish hours with the game. As such, there’s plenty to talk about and lots of stuff to speculate, and that’s what we’ll be doing today.

We’ll discuss our favorite trio of Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge. Three characters who were nothing but minor characters in the first game have become something more. It goes without saying that this goes into spoiler territory, so if you don’t mind being spoiled, then continue. So don’t blame me if I spoil something for you.

What is Jessie’s Fate in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Ah, Jessie, that thirsty waifu that has set the internet on fire. There’s zero doubt that her role has not only been expanded in Final Fantasy 7 Remake but has captured the hearts of millions due to her charm and sass, and she’s pretty kick-ass. Sadly, I’m afraid things don’t look too good for her. When we last saw her, she along with Biggs and Barrett, tried to stop Shinra from dropping the Midgar Sector 7 plate. During the battle, a Shinra helicopter enters the fray, and Jessie gets the idea to take it out with one of her special grenades, blowing everything up… including herself.

Cloud and Tifa eventually find Jessie in bad shape, and it doesn’t look like she is going to make it. She succumbs to her injuries, her light fades out, and poor Tifa lets out a few tears for her fallen companion and friend. However, seeing how Final Fantasy 7 Remake is all about changing destiny, there’s a chance she may have survived, but it hasn’t been confirmed. So, for now, Jessie is one of the many who gave up her life in the fight against Shinra.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake - Jessie doesn't make it

Damn you, Shinra, damn you!

But wait…….. is that Jessie’s glove in the ending?

Surely Biggs Made it out Alive

Biggs, another character with a small role in the original Final Fantasy 7, became a fan favorite in the remake. Smart, tough, a smooth talker, and ostentatious. He was in the final battle to stop Shinra from dropping the Sector 7 plate. Running interfere for Barrett and crew and had been taking on a large number of Shinra soldiers alone. When Cloud found him, he was badly hurt and slumped up against a wall, looking like he was the next contestant who “Who gets to die next.” After a heartfelt conversation with Cloud, it looked grim as he lowered his head and was gone.

Or was he? Upon beating the game, we see that Biggs was somehow saved, either by those ghostly apparitions called the “Whispers” or if an Avalanche cell was able to recover him, or perhaps he woke up and strolled out himself.

Either way, he’s recovering at the Orphanage in the Sector 5 slums. The question is, how did he get there? I suppose we’ll find out in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake - Biggs is alive

Wedge Lives, at Least, Right?

It seems Wedge has nine lives, just like those cats he keeps company with. He pops right back up whenever we think we’ve seen his end. Like Jessie and Biggs, he was also on the plate battle. However, he was found earlier by Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith. Who went on to warn the citizens of Sector 7 to escape because the sky was about to fall. Then, by some misfortune, a chuck of the plate dropped right on top of Wedge. Surely, he was dead.

Nope, instead, he plummeted into a Shinra secret lab that was located under the Sector 7 slums the entire time (dun dun dun!). Luckily for him, Barret and Tifa were able to rescue him. This sidelined him for a while, but he saved the team while fleeing from the Shinra HQ by calling in a helicopter.

The last time we saw Wedge, he was being attacked by those very same “Whispers” who were yet trying to fix Destiny by attempting to kill Wedge. In Final Fantasy 7, Wedge, along with Jessie and Biggs, all die early on. The Whispers know this and are likely highly pissed that someone is trying to change fate. As Wedge is fighting for his life, he says he’s sorry and wants to make a difference while the camera fades to black, and we hear the sound of glass shattering. This implies that he’s tossed through a window on a high-up Shinra HQ floor.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake - Wedge dies

Of course, there’s a chance he does live, as we don’t get clear confirmation of what happens to him. Sure, we get implications, but that sound of glass could be a number of things. We’ll have to wait for the next Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to see what happens to Wedge. I hope he lives; he needs a redemption arc or something.

There you have it, the outcomes of Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge during their adventures in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Be sure to come back, as we’ll dive into more lore and outcomes from the game.
