With the PlayStation 5 launching this year, Sony skips E3 yet again

No Sony or PlayStation 5 at E3 2020.

For the past few weeks, the internet couldn’t stop speculating on if Sony and PlayStation would return to E3 this year. Seeing how they sat out E3 2019, and had hosted their own event, many were wondering they’d do the same this year. Well, wonder no more as Sony has confirmed that they won’t be in attendance at E3 2020 (via GamesIndustry).

“After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020,” said a Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson. “We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year.

“We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.”

This is an end of an era, as Sony had always attended E3 to show off the PlayStation ahead of the launch date. But now that Sony has already hosted the PlayStation Experience, chances are this is where Sony will give us our first look at the PlayStation 5. However, with that comes the new question of where is this event going to be hosted.

With a month-long PlayStation event already kicking off tomorrow and lasting until February 16th, 2020. Now many are wondering if this is where Sony is going to make their play. With E3 being out of the picture now, it could be possible. Of course, we’ll have to wait to see what Sony decides where to officially show off the PS5.

As for E3, perhaps this a sign of the times. When E3 was at the forefront of gaming conventions, there were as many other popular gaming conventions. Now we have PAX, Toyko Game Show, Gamescom and many others that are accessible to both the industry and more consumer-friendly. Maybe it’s time for E3 to evolve, or at the very least show us that they can manage our data without getting us doxxed.

I finally was able to attend E3 during 2017 and had plans to return this year, but now I’m not so sure. Sony has pulled out, while Microsoft had left before this. That leaves Nintendo as the sole major company, and now that both Sony and Microsoft are out, I wonder what Nintendo will do.

I wonder what the ESA must be thinking about right now.
