Future Xbox consoles will simply be called “Xbox”

During the Game Awards Show, Microsoft named dropped their (first) next-generation console; Xbox Series X. Since then, Microsoft was keen to clarify a few things regarding the naming convention.

During an interview with Business Insider, Microsoft made it clear that the name of the console and brand going forth is just Xbox. It would seem the brand has come full circle as the name is repeating the very first console from Microsoft (no the Dreamcast doesn’t count).

“The name we’re carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox,” “And at The Game Awards you saw that name come to life through the Xbox Series X.” — Microsoft representative to Business Insider.

This means no more Xbox One, Xbox 360 or anything other than Xbox going forth. Which is both confusing, yet makes sense going forth. For example, look at most high-end cars. Let’s take Ferrari for example. There’s only the Ferrari brand, but different models within the brand; Ferrari 355, Ferrari 488 Spider or and so forth. Which is exactly what Microsoft is doing with the Xbox brand.

Everything we know about Xbox Series X

This sets them up to release multiple SKUs, like with the Lockhart which (for now) stated to being the lesser powerful next-generation Xbox. The downside to this is the confusion that it will eventually cause for those who aren’t familiar with the landscape. But who’s to say what will happen, until it does.

I don’t know about you, but I think it’s a good idea – though I was originally against the thought. It just makes sense. Those, when you start referring to the past Xbox, that’s going to be an interesting conversation.

As for the next-generation of Xbox, the Xbox Series X, it is slated to be released next Holiday 2020. Alongside Sony’s more conventional PlayStation 5, which means the battle for your budget is going to be a fierce one.
