Legends of Runeterra is Riot’s Answer to Hearthstone

By Diego PerezOctober 16, 2019
Legends of Runeterra

If you’re looking for a new card game to play after the recent Blizzard debacle, then you might want to put Legends of Runeterra on your radar. Announced as a part of the League of Legends 10th anniversary celebration. Legends of Runterra is a card game set in the League universe that features the same champions that players know and love.

Legends of Runeterra

Players will be able to travel to different regions of Runeterra, unlocking new cards depending on the region of Runeterra you’re currently playing in. Legends of Runterra‘s biggest draw is that you don’t have to pay for randomized packs to unlock cards in the game. There will be multiple ways to get the cards you want so you can build an ideal deck. While there is a paid currency in the form of Coins, these won’t be necessary to acquire new cards (although they can be spent for cards if the player chooses). Coins will also be used to purchase things in the in-game store, which will offer weekly “wildcards,” which can be turned into whatever card you want.

Legends of Runeterra isn’t trying to be a carbon copy of mega-popular card games like Hearthstone, but rather to improve and innovate withing the CCG genre. “We’re all huge card game fans on the LoR team, so we know the issues with the genre: things like excessive cost, over-the-top randomness, and seeing the same decks over and over,” says executive producer Jeff Jew. “We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what we’d do differently, and now we have a chance to shake up the genre by keeping what’s great, improving what’s not, and adding some new twists of our own.” You can check out an overview of some of Legends of Runterra‘s unique features in the video below.

You can pre-register for Legends of Runeterra right now, and everyone who does so will be guaranteed a chance to play the game immediately. Riot is offering a “preview patch” which will be available through October 21 with a second coming in November. In other League of Legends related news, Riot also announced that Leaguewill be coming to mobile and consoles in the form of Wild Rift, a new version of the game built from the ground up. Riot also unveiled Project A, a competitive FPS that blends Counter-Strike and Overwatch, and Project L, a fighting game set in the League universe.

When he's not playing video games, Diego's talking about video games, and he does both a lot.
