The CW’s show Riverdale is now infamous for being absolutely ridiculous in terms of its plot. It’s true that the show started with a murder mystery and somehow, we’ve ended up having a whole season dedicated to a murderous D&D game, encouraging drug gangs and a cult that turns out to be stealing and selling organs. However, that does mean that we are not dying to find out just how off the rails next season is going to be.
One major thing that happened last season wasn’t actually part of the show but will have a big impact on next season. Actor Luke Perry, who played Archie’s dad Fred, passed away suddenly. However, according to series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, it will a plot point to contend with:
“When Luke passed, we’d already more or less outlined the last two or three episodes, and we didn’t want to rush that or get it wrong. So we are 100 percent going to deal with it narratively at the beginning of Season 4, and we want that episode to really honor the character of Fred and honestly, to honor the actor Luke and our friend Luke…[it’s] going to be a big part of Archie’s journey next season, honestly.”
Season 3 also left off with one seriously big cliffhanger, wherein Betty, Veronica, and Archie all standing in front of a roaring fire, covered in blood and throwing their clothing into the fire and promising to never speak of “it” again. One of the clothing items getting burned? Jughead’s infamous beanie. Does that mean Jughead is dead? As the actor Cole Sprouse tells Popbuzz, the character could be in a
“I think when Riverdale is at its strongest it’s about the characters, their dynamics, their personal narratives and their relationships with one another. And I think Jughead asking himself how his family has affected him – is what I’d kind of like to see…But I also think I’d love to see a Jughead that feels kind of like a season one Jughead, which is much more of a quiet sort of monologue side.”
There might be also be a crossover with the new Archie Universe spin off, Katy Keene, which stars Lucy Hale as the title character and set to feature Ashleigh Murray as Josie, who just left Riverdale last season.
When could we see Riverdale Season 4 grace the small screen? The rumor is that it should be coming out in September or October of 2019 but there’s no set date yet. There’s also no word about this being the final season, so don’t get too worried about this being the final one…unless they change their minds, of course. We’ll keep you informed as we learn more.
