Playstation Classic Announced, Priced and up for Pre-Order

Playstation Classic

As the saying goes “Anything you can do, I can do better”. First came Nintendo with the NES Mini, then the SNES Mini (Also SEGA had a Mini console of their own, but we don’t talk of that); and while the gaming world waits for the announcement of the N64 Mini, Sony have decided to jump into the smaller version console retro market with the Playstation Classic.

Announced right out of nowhere via social media early Wednesday morning USA Time, Sony have come out with the Playstation Classic, a smaller version of the console released in 1994 with 20 pre-installed games.

Playstation Classic

“The design of PlayStation Classic perfectly mirrors the original console, with the same logo, button layout and packaging – but 45% smaller than 1994’s PlayStation. This miniature console comes complete with two wired controllers, an HDMI cable to connect to your TV, plus a virtual memory card to save your adventures as you switch between titles.” comes the outline from the official page about the console.

Playstation Classic

The console will come with 2 replica classic Playstation controllers, meaning that the are not going to have analog sticks or rumble features like modern controllers. So a lot of kids who grew up in the Playstation 2 or further era will have to experience the games without those modern features and sensations… Just like we had to in 1994. As for those of you who have older Playstation controllers and are hoping to connect those to the console… Sorry, but the connections look to be of a USB nature.

However if these connections are USB based, you might be able to get away with using PS3 or PS4 era controllers with the console, but probably without rumble features. Nothing official from Sony at this stage about using USB controllers or Fight Sticks with this console at this stage, but you never know.

So people would be wondering what the games are going to be. While Sony hasn’t announced the full list of 20 full and untouched titles that will be released on the Playstation Classic, they have made note of the following:

  • Final Fantasy VII
  • TEKKEN 3
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Jumping Flash!
  • Wild Arms

So unlike Nintendo, it looks like Sony is flexing it’s 3rd party muscle and releasing more than just first party titles on their retro console. Let’s hope that Playstation take websites lists like Top 10 games and also Top 10 HD remaster requests when making their list.

At the moment, you can preorder the Playstation Classic at Gamestop for $99.99, or JB Hifi & EB Games in Australia for $149.95. More information about the Playstation Classic will appear before it’s release date of December 3, 2018. Personally, as someone who has been a Playstation loyalist since the first console all I will say is….
