Steven Spielberg to Direct ‘Blackhawk’ Movie

By Sara Roncero-MenendezApril 22, 2018

We’ve long talked about how the DCEU is in big trouble, and how they are bringing in new talent on their big projects, like Batgirl and the untitled Harley Quinn movie, to try and revive their dying franchises. However, sometimes the tried and true method works too, like getting veteran filmmaker and maker of our childhoods Steven Spielberg to direct a Blackhawk movie.

While the project is still in the development stages, Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment will produce the film and the current plan is that Spielberg will direct it. David Koepp, who wrote the screenplays for Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, and Death Becomes Her, will be the screenwriter. No other staff or any talk of a cast has come up as of yet. The film will be released by Warner Bros.

For those who have never heard of Blackhawk (like me), here’s what the comic is about: Set in World War II, a group of ace pilots called the Blackhawk Squadron take to the sky to fight the Nazis. Their ranks have changed over the years, and while they do cross paths with the superheroes of the Dc pantheon, they tend to stick to their own devices (so hopefully, no Batman or Superman surprise appearances).

“We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure,” said Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich in a statement. “We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing ‘Blackhawk’ to movie audiences worldwide.”

“It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring ‘Ready Player One’ to the screen,” Spielberg added. “They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on ‘Blackhawk’.”

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
