The DCEU is in a weird place. Their Superman franchise is a dud, Suicide Squad was not the hit they were hoping for, and the big ticket item, Wonder Woman, isn’t due for a sequel yet. Writers and directors dropping left and right from projects, like with the Batgirl movie. Now, some good news – Cathy Yan has been brought on to direct the next Harley Quinn movie, based on the Birds of Prey comic.
The film will star Margot Robbie, who played the villain Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. Filming will likely begin after Robbie finishes her work as Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s Manson Family movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The film will be written by Christina Hodson, who is also working on the script for the untitled Batgirl movie. There is no other cast currently attached to the project.
Cathy Yan is the first female Asian director tapped for a superhero film, and the third woman director for a DC property. She previously worked on the feature film Dead Pigs, which premiered earlier this year. DC seems to be making a concerted effort to get more women and more people of color in the director’s chair, a move that has been paying off for them so far. Still, with no release date, we don’t know if this film will ever get off the ground and into theaters, so keep those fingers crosses.
