Buffy creator Joss Whedon returns to write Buffy: Season 12 comic book series

Buffy

As reported earlier this week, Josh Whedon removed himself from the upcoming Batgirl movie project due to a creative block when it came to the character. However, according to CBR.com, it seems that Josh Whedon is not completely out of ideas when it comes to female characters; as he is returning to one of the projects that helped make his name: Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Buffy

Teaming up with longtime Buffy comic book series writer Christos Gage, and illustrator Georges Jeanty, Whedon is going to be the head writer for the upcoming Season 12 comic book which has been titled Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 12: The Reckoning.

Picking up after the world-altering finale from Buffy Season 11, the series’ synopsis indicates that the Scooby Gang have had an uncharacteristically laid back year away from fighting the forces of evil. However, when Xander and Dawn’s housewarming is gatecrashed by some familiar faces, Buffy and her crew will reach for their stakes once again. Forced to battle with a legion of demons, Wolfram Hart and a vampire from the future called Harth, Buffy will apparently find herself trapped in a time warp that could end the Slayers forever.

With alternate futures clearly playing a big part, The Reckoning will once again bring back future Slayer Fray, who first appeared in 2001’s self-titled spin-off. The Reckoning will see the return of Faith and Angel, as well as fan-favorite Illyria, though whether they help or hinder the cause remains to be seen.

Buffy

This is the first time that Whedon has been involved with the writing of the Buffy sequel comic series since Buffy: Season 9. (Which personally, is where I completely gave up on buying the series as the ending to that Season involved Buffy and Angel becoming gods and having sex while flying around the world, crashing into world monuments.)

The first issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 12: The Reckoning will be able to pre-order from comic book shops in March. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 12: The Reckoning #1 goes on sale on June 20 and will be available with three variant covers from artists Stephanie Hans, Georges Jeanty with Karl Story and Dan Jackson, and Karl Moline.
