James Gunn Confirms Clayface Film

...that's random.
By Todd BlackDecember 13, 2024
James Gunn, Clayface

Just when you think that the two main comic book universes weren’t going to get any weirder, wilder, or more abstract in who gets a starring role in a major film or TV show…you don’t know James Gunn. He’s been on a tear for a while as he starts to craft the newly formed DCU, including recently dropping the first official part of it via Creature Commandos. We also know that the Superman film in 2025 will start the movie slate. Then, there’s a Clayface movie, apparently…

Yes, this is true. James Gunn revealed on Twitter that Mike Flanagan is heading up a Clayface film that’ll drop in 2026:

Exciting news out of @DCOfficial Studios today as #Clayface, a DCU story from a script by Mike Flanagan, has been OFFICIALLY greenlit.

Clayface premieres in 2026.

Obviously, that’s not too much to go on. Thankfully, more details were posted over on BlueSky:

Details for the upcoming #Clayface film • Will reportedly be a horror-tragedy • Budget is ~$40M• Takes place in the DCU• Character won't be painted as a villain• Mike Flanagan loves the Clayface episodes in 'Batman: The Animated Series'

Even with these new details, it’s curious how things will go, especially with a relatively small budget for a character that will definitely require CGI a lot in his clay form. There’s also the question of whether Batman will show up in some capacity, or how it’ll connect to the DCU, and more. For now, let’s just roll with it and then see what happens.
