The Story

Tsubasa is now in the custody of the Genbu much to his chagrin; however, he’s not the only one they took in as they also have the Silver Snake in custody as well. Even though Tsubasa is conflicted about what his role will be from now on, the time to hash that out is put on hold because Fumi is drawn into a mind vault by K, the girl who’s always at Yanagi’s side. K attacks Fumi; however, despite learning the truth about K’s identity, she is able to fight back. That’s when Yanagi steps in and is about to turn the tide of battle but just as one would expect, Kyutarou shows up and he’s not alone as he brings Tsubasa with him. Kyutarou learns that K is not just a snake but The Great White Snake! In addition, Yanagi is the Crimson Snake.

A battle of three snakes could have taken place but after Yanagi and Kyutarou injured each other, they decided to call a truce since Yanagi’s goal was to inform Fumi about some rather interesting information. They will cross paths again; however, when that happens remains to be seen.

While Fumi sleeps and recovers, Kyutarou and Takaya pay a visit to The White Cat who confirms some of the information that Yanagi said. She also reveals that The White Queen went missing on the day Fumi had completed her trials. The White Cat fills in some more of the backstory and it’s up to Kyutarou to tell Fumi all of the missing pieces, except there’s one problem… she’s already figured them out!

Characters

It’s a very rare occasion when every single character that received development did so in a way where it would be a major spoiler to the story… this ought to be fun while I try and dance around things here.

So, as I mentioned, K is The Great White Snake who wishes for nothing but Despair. With a title like that and with the way things were set up, it’s pretty obvious that she’s going to be, along with Yanagi, the “Final Boss” of this series. Once she is brought down, that will probably be where we get the “…and the Sweepers continued to keep the minds of the world safe.” Ending. Judging by the reveals here in this volume, this battle is not going to be easy by any means. Both K and Yanagi are highly skilled and dangerous and will pose the greatest challenge for Kyutarou yet.

Tsubasa has a wish and a promise that he intends to keep. This volume teased who it was he made that promise to and while the person the promise was made with is revealed, the promise itself was not… at least, not in the sense of him saying “My promise is to…” Instead, he talked about his goals before mentioning the promise which, in turn, I believe revealed what it was. This keeps him a bit shrouded in mystery. Even though we can piece it together, WHY he made the promise is still missing. Also, as one would expect, he was quite resistant to being named part of the Genbu but he eventually accepts his new role and position. The only reason why he did has to do with Fumi which adds even more questions.

Between K, Yanagi, The White Cat, and Tsubasa, we learned a LOT. This was a great example of how character development can not only tie into the story but actually create it as well.

Overall Thoughts

After the last volume’s filler content, the story moved forward in a massive way. With the information that we learned here, it has become crystal clear what the final conflict is going to be. We were given a small taste of it when the fight between Yanagi and Kyutarou broke out and if the few moments they spent in battle is any indication, when they go all-out, it’s going to be epic. Fumi has her sights set on K which is going to be a powerful battle in both strength and emotions.

There are still quite a few questions to answer, though… mainly with the snakes. With Silver in their possession now, will Kyutarou eat him? If I recall, he wanted to consume the rest of the snakes and merge them into one and become its vessel to rid the world of their terror. Will this lead to him consuming Yanagi and K as well? If so, if Kyutarou becomes the ultimate snake, will he go out of control and have to be put down by Fumi? There are a lot of ways this series can wrap up but after this volume, things have gotten way more interesting!

For now, it looks like Yanagi and K are plotting their next move. Whether or not they’ll make it in Queen’s Quality volume 20 or if we’re going to get another cooldown period remains to be seen. Either way, this is shaping up to be one hell of an arc, which could possibly be the last.
