Splatoon 3 Director Dishes On “Side Order” DLC

By Todd BlackJune 17, 2023
Splatoon 3 Review, Xenoblade Chronicles, Splatfest

Splatoon 3 is easily one of the best successes on the Nintendo Switch. It’s sold over ten million copies in Japan alone, and the global sales are equally impressive. People love the Splatfests, they love the new “Big Run” events, and they’re always eager to jump back in when something fresh arrives. Earlier this year, Nintendo revealed there would be two DLC waves for the game. The first already arrived via the “Return To Inkopolis” content, and fans have been waiting for more information on the story DLC known as “Side Order.” Thankfully, via an interview with Famitsu, we have more of an idea of what to expect.

Director Hisashi Nogami, along with co-directors Shintaro Sato and Seita Inoue, talked about “Side Order,” and one of the things that they emphasized was that this wasn’t just going to be a new story; there would be new gameplay too:

“We can’t give away any details yet, but it’s going to be a new story that Off the Hook will be part of. We also plan on making the gameplay completely new and different, so please look forward to it.”

That’s very curious because Splatoon 3, and its predecessors, have had a singular way of doing things, and they’ve evolved it with new weapons and abilities. So seeing something totally new will be a big change of pace.

As for the “context” of the story, we’re going to see a twist on the final Splatfest of the last game where Team Order won instead of Team Chaos:

“We didn’t decide on this from the beginning, but when coming up with plans for the Expansion Pass, we thought it would be interesting to make a world where (Team) Order triumphed and so we acted on that.”

Sadly, we don’t have a release date for the content, but hopefully, we’ll get the answer soon.
