Comic Review: Rick and Morty vs Cthulhu Issue #1

By Josh PiedraDecember 12, 2022

Title: Rick and Morty vs Cthulhu Issue #1
Publisher: Oni Press, Adult Swim
Language: English
Format: Digital
Pages: 45
Genre: Sci-Fi, Comedy
Publication Date: December 7, 2022

The Story

If you’re familiar with the TV show, then you know all about Rick Sanchez and his insane adventures with his grandson, Morty. The show has taken off to where multiple spinoffs in different forms have been spinning up for quite some time and now, we can add another one in the form of a comic book series!

In Rick and Morty vs Cthulhu, Rick and Morty head to another planet to deliver some sugar to some aliens who treat it as if it were drugs (possibly cocaine but who am I to judge?). The deal goes south when they claim that it’s fake. Turns out Morty couldn’t find any sugar so he swapped it for artificial sweetener! Fearing that the bugs might do something to their home, Rick goes around and scans everything but something seems amiss and it has nothing to do with sugar.

Jerry is found reading a book while Beth is eating some shrimp fettuccini. All of this seems odd to Rick which could only mean one thing… Cthulhu is back and his influence is spreading! Before things can get to a point of no return, it’s time to track down the Lovecraftian eldritch horror and put an end to him before it’s too late!

Final Thoughts

Being a big fan of the show helps here. As I’m reading the dialogue panels, I can just hear the characters in my head squabbling as if they were on TV! It definitely helped with the immersion but what can I say? This is Rick and Morty through and through.

What you can expect is Morty to screw up, and Rick to be the calm and collected mad scientist who explains everything, solve everything, and pretty much is the reason why anything gets accomplished. Jerry is useless, Beth is the voice of reason, and Summer is just the badass we all know her for. There are no surprises if you’re familiar with the series.

Watching them all hop from dimension to dimension, and visiting some of H.P. Lovecraft’s worlds was really entertaining. For someone like me who loves the Lovecraftian mythos, there were some really nice nods to the books all with your typical Rick and Morty flair.

Fans of the series will absolutely love this crossover! Though, to be honest, if you’re not a fan of Rick and Morty, you may or may not find humor in this. While the jokes and overall dialogue remain true to what the series is known for, some purists might just find this in bad taste but for the rest of us, this is just a small gold nugget we get to keep for ourselves!
