Tom Cannon Provides An Update on Project L, Will Be Free To Play

By Keith MitchellAugust 1, 2022
Project L - Tom Cannon Update August 1 2022-01

Once upon a time ago, the Cannon Brothers were working on a free-to-play fighting game called Rising Thunder. That is, until Riot Games game a knocking, purchased the Radiant Entertainment studio, and then the game changed into a fighting game based on the League of Legends world, Project L.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard about the game, and today, right before he headed out to EVO 2022, Tom Cannon provided an update on the title. It’s still in development, and another update will be provided later this year. However, here’s a breakdown of what Tom Cannon revealed.

  • Gameplay will feature team-based fights (2 vs. 2)
  • Netcode is an essential part of the game
  • Project L will be free to play
  • Project L is a love letter to the Fighting Game Community
  • A new character, Illaoi, the Kraken Priestess, was shown off. More of Illaoi can be seen over at the Riot Games blog.

The video is a nice watch, as we get an update on Project L and a brief look at the game being developed.

Illaoi, the Kraken Priestess

According to the Riot Games blog is the process of selecting who’ll make it into Project L is daunting. Just because they have access to a large number of existing characters. One such addition to the roster is Illaoi, the Kraken Priestess.

llaoi is the Truth Bearer of Nagakabouros, the deity of life, ocean storms, and motion, who is often depicted as a colossal kraken. Illaoi and her people come from the Serpent Isles, an island archipelago that includes Bilgewater and her home island of Buhru.

In League of Legends, Illaoi’s gameplay focuses on testing the worthiness of individuals using the golden artifact known as the Eye of God. Wielding the massive idol, she rips souls from their host bodies, and summons spectral tentacles to repeatedly slam into them.

There’s a great read on character selection and more detailed info on Illaoi, so please check out the Riot Games blog.

That said, I wouldn’t expect to hear or see anything else regarding Project L during EVO 2022. As much as I’d love to see more of the game, it’s way too early. I suspect that Riot Games will have something planned, such as its own convention, where it will show off its other projects, including Project L.

As for when Project L will be released, there hasn’t been any news on that. But I wouldn’t expect that for quite some time.

EVO 2022 takes place from August 5-7, 2022, and people from all over the world are converging to Las Vegas to compete or just enjoy the event. We expect to hear and see several announcements from the event, including a new character or two from Capcom’s Street Fighter VI.

I wish I could have gone, but COVID-19 is still a thing, and I’m still scared about getting sick again. So, for now, I’ll stick to my home and will watch EVO from afar. But, next year is a goal. Assuming the world is still intact.
