Anime First Reaction: Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san

By Josh PiedraApril 10, 2022

Sometimes when you read a synopsis, it seems interesting, and then the anime airs and it turns out that the synopsis was WAY off. In the case of Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san, it depicts Shikimori as having a dark side to her that her boyfriend Izumi loves. I have no idea who wrote that synopsis or where they got that from but it could be further from the truth! What is the truth, though, and was it better or worse than what was originally depicted?

Let’s Go!

First Episode Synopsis

Izumi is a cute, innocent teenage boy who just so happens to have one of the school’s cutest girls as his girlfriend. He also has the worst luck in the entire world to the point where his mother tells him to beware damn near everything under the sun before he heads out for the first day of the school year. She was right because as soon as he leaves his house, he trips over a rock, gets exhaust from a truck blown in his face, narrowly misses a bird pooping on him, and trips over a small lip on the side of the road, falling into some dirt.

When he meets up with his girlfriend, Shikimori, they look to see if they end up in the same class together. When they do, they are soon joined by their friends Neko, Yui, and Shuu. They all end up in the same class and Shuu wonders if they want to go out and do something. They end up going bowling where Neko tries to get Shikimori to throw the game because she thinks it’ll help her look cute in front of Izumi. Instead, she bowls a perfect 300 game!

Then they walk home together.

Worth Watching?

YES – While the recap of the first episode may seem boring, the show is cute beyond words. The hook of this show stems from Izumi having the worst luck and Shikimori always being there to protect him. Whether it’s smacking away a flying newspaper, knocking away a flying eraser, or kicking a convenience store sign out of the way before it can hit Izumi in the head, Shikimori is his good luck charm… or should I say, his back luck intervention.

The chemistry between the two of them is amazing. Shikimori is simply in love with Izumi and wants to protect him with all of her heart. Even though Izumi feels bad that she does it all of the time because it makes him feel useless. The thing about Izumi is that he is completely self-aware of his bad luck but he wants to be independent and not always rely on Shikimori but, she simply won’t allow that because, to her, Izumi is the most precious thing in the world.

It’s a wholesome and cute show with a bit of light comedy mixed in. While I don’t think this is going to win anime of the year, I can easily see Shikimori already getting nominated for Best Girl. This show reminds me a lot of Fly Me to the Moon (Tonikaku Kawaii) which is a good thing! If you enjoyed that show, you will enjoy Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san!
