Super Mario RPG Director Wants To Make True Sequel

By Todd BlackFebruary 15, 2022
Super Mario RPG

In today’s gaming world, certain characters and franchises branching out to do “something unexpected” is almost typical nowadays. Especially when you factor in things like Fornite, mobile titles, and of course, DLC crossovers in fighting games. But for the first few gaming generations, it was not that popular, or even done outside of a few things. So when Super Mario RPG came out, a collaboration between Nintendo and then Square Soft, and shocked people with how good it was and how you could take a character like Mario out of his element and put him into something exciting like this…it changed things.

What’s more, this led to MULTIPLE RPGs franchises starring Mario and company, including Paper Mario (to start anyway…) and Mario & Luigi. But  many fans have wanted a true sequel to Super Mario RPG. And apparently…so does the director of the OG game.

Chihiro Fujioka did an interview with MinnMax and said that he would love to make a sequel…then retire.

“Yeah, I would absolutely love to make one… in my career I’ve been involved with a lot of games, and I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game if possible.”

“I think Mario & Luigi is cool, but I would like to go back and create a Mario RPG where you’re only controlling Mario.”

We’re sure many would like that as well, especially given how popular, and impact, the game is to this day.
