The Story

The third volume of In Another World with My Smartphone focuses on one major aspect… the engagement of Touya and Princess Yumina!

Essentially, Touya discovered the (rather obvious) culprit behind the attempted poisoning of the king. After using her Mystic Eye, Yumina determined that there was no malice or ulterior motives residing within Touya. After witnessing his pure and good nature, she instantly fell in love with him and asked for his hand in marriage. With the King’s blessing, all of it was a done deal…. Sort of.

The problem lies in the fact that Yumina is only 12 and while marriage was common at young ages in this world, Touya only knows of the legal limits of Japan… which are men must be 18 and girls, 16. After hearing his concerns, the King ordered the two of them two live together for two years. If, after that amount of time, they cannot find happiness, they will give up on the idea of marriage.

We learn that Yumina has the ability to summon beasts. Touya is interested in this and ends up summoning one of his own. They say that the type of beast summoned is determined proportionately by the amount of magic the summoner holds. Well, since our main protagonist is overpowered as all hell like any main character of an isekai series, he ends up summoning one of the fabled noble beasts, a tiger known as The White Monarch. In order to form a contract, The White Monarch wants to analyze Touya’s magic and if he deems him strong enough, he will form a contract. The results were…. Hilarious. Oh, and his new name is Kohaku if that tells you anything.

After this, Touya runs into some problems with some rebellious blue-ranked adventurers and then learns how to apply null magic to certain apps on his smartphone which gives him… well… a bit of an “advantage” when he wants to see “certain things.” This brings our volume to a close.

Characters

The majority of the volume was focused on Yumina. As mentioned above, she fell in love with Touya almost instantly but there was a deeper reason for it. She feared that because of her Mystic Eye, any suitor that came for marriage could have the reputations ruined should she reject them due to her power. If the people knew that she rejected them because she saw something in their soul with her eye, that could prove to be life-altering for those who were rejected. When she spied Touya and used her eye… she saw the perfect candidate. She made it clear that she didn’t use Touya but she did act fast because she was scared that with him being an adventurer, that she would never see him again and her chance to be with someone so kind would be lost.

That’s actually really sweet when you think about it… but then again, don’t think too much because SHE’S TWELVE!

Touya fully realizes this and it was pretty funny for him to think of her as being cute and then quickly remind himself of her age and how those thoughts aren’t appropriate. Still, he was also told that he was allowed to have more than one wife in the world which shocked him even more. He instantly rejects the thought of having a harem; however, it’s made perfectly clear in this volume that his lack of desire for one may not matter as everyone is falling in love with him.

The one thing we do learn about Touya is the fact that he seems like a decent guy but he really does have some ulterior motives. This comes in the form of his thoughts and how he sometimes contradicts those thoughts immediately after having them. The perfect example was with Yumina and her age but he still thought she was cute. Then there was the moment where he flat out confessed to all the girls that he thought they were all cute without even thinking twice about what he was saying. I wouldn’t call him brainless or inept… I actually believe he knows what he’s doing but he’s a bit too good-natured to fully realize just what he’s doing.

For instance, as I just said, he told all of the girls they were cute but he earlier rejected the thought of having a harem. By saying they’re all cute, he’s just opening up that possibility more and more. The fact that he almost peeped using his phone and actually weighed his options either tells me that he’s truly inept or he’s fully aware of what he’s doing but choosing to fool himself into thinking he’s innocent.

It’s kind of hard to explain but I think you get what I’m going for here. There are just some moments where Touya seems pure and innocent and other times where he just seems a bit too confident in his innocence to where he doesn’t come off as completely innocent.

By the way, that’s not a critique… I actually like that. It gives him some personality and makes him an interesting character! Like… who would have thought it? An interesting main character in a fantasy isekai series! Will miracles ever cease?

Final Word

Another short read for a volume but an entertaining one. I love the chemistry between Touya and Yumina. As for them getting together in the end, I’m not sure if that will truly happen. However, I think that once we reach the end of this series, Touya will just end up marrying everyone and they’ll all just love him equally and continue to go on adventures with each other. It seems like the common denominator solution and I can see this series going in that direction. If it wasn’t, then why would they even bother to mention that you could have multiple wives in this world? If there was no intent to possibly go there, that piece of information is useless and nothing more than a moot point.

In any event, we’ve gained a new member of the non-harem harem, we have a new cuddly pet in Kohaku, and we have Yae hinting that she’s into incest. What more could you ask for out of an isekai that’s turning out to be quite the entertaining read?

And if you don’t think so, Touya will just threaten to cut off the tip with a razor. Just think about that in case you’re having doubts about this series!
