Disney’s ‘Encanto’ Shows Off Colorful World and Magical Family

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJuly 8, 2021

Disney has been known to create magical worlds full of color and joy, and it seems like their latest film, Encanto will be following in that tradition, along with their tried and true fish-out-of-water story:

Encanto, which means “charm” or “enchantment” in Spanish, follows the Madrigal family, who live in the mountains of Colombia and all of whom have special talents and powers, like super strength or the ability to control flowers. All except Mirabel, who appears to have no talent whatsoever.

Stephanie Beatriz, best known for her role as Rosa in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, voices Mirabel. The cast also includes María Cecilia Botero, Wilmer Valderrama, Adassa, Diane Guerrero, Mauro Castillo, Angie Cepeda, Jessica Darrow, Rhenzy Feliz, and Carolina Gaitan.

Lin-Manuel Miranda will be providing music for the film, with Jared Bush and Byron Howard directing, both of whom worked on Zootopia as well as writing/directing other Disney project. Bush wrote the screenplay with Charise Castro Smith, who wrote for The Exorcist (2016) and The Haunting of Hill House.

Given that this is only a teaser trailer, there’s still probably some plot details missing. One interesting thing to note is that Mirabel’s clothes are always covered in butterflies, which could point to a transformation motif, whether physical or emotional. There also appears to be some momentary drama, with the matriarch of the family holding a candle and looking worried, so there may be a source of external pressure and drama.

Encanto is set to premiere in theaters on November 24, 2021.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
