New 2D Metroid Game Possibly Being Announced Soon

By Todd BlackMay 15, 2021
Metroid: Samus Returns MercurySteam

This week has been one for all sorts of Nintendo Switch rumors, and they’ve been growing more and more curious with each and every post from the insider known as “Zippo”. Because so far he’s given updates on Mario Kart, Fire Emblem, Breath of the Wild 2, Donkey Kong and teased more. And now, he’s updated his blog to allude to the fact that a 2D Metroid game might be coming to the Switch very soon.

According to him, the game will be coming from MercurySteam, who was the team that made the 3DS remake/remaster of Metroid Samus Returns. Nintendo was so happy with what they did on the 3DS that they have gotten them to make a game for Switch:

“A new 2D game from MercurySteam two hundred percent exists, and is in fact, done,” said Zippo. “All Nintendo needs to do at this point is announce it. Nintendo (and by extension, Sakamoto.) internally is extremely happy with how the title turned out. The only other thing I’ve heard recently s that the game is running at a very smooth 60FPS.”

This actually ties into an insider leak from 2019 that stated that Nintendo was indeed working on another 2D Metroid remake/remaster. That leak stated that it could be Super Metroid (originally from the SNES), but another option here could be the beloved Metroid Fusion from the GBA days

Either way, if this is true, and if it is done, it could be announced at E3 2021.
