The Snyder Cut Helped Boost HBO Subscriptions, Doing Very Well Overseas

By Todd BlackMarch 30, 2021
Zack Snyder's Justice League, The Snyder Cut, Snyderverse

Many pundits of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, aka The Snyder Cut, stated that even IF the movie came out, it wouldn’t be watched by many. Especially if it was indeed 4 hours long (it was that more or less if you include the credits). Except, numbers are arising that not only say the contrary, but that the film is doing MUCH better than anyone expected.

For example, you might have heard that The Snyder Cut had about 1.8 million viewers on HBO Max within the first few days, which put it behind Wonder Woman 1984 which had 2.2 million views in the same period. A very good number in its own right, but there’s a problem there. Mainly, that only accounted for HBO Max numbers, and as many have noted, those aren’t the only numbers you can count.

Such as how in Canada, the movie wasn’t on HBO Max, it was on Crave, and it gained 1.1 million views on that service alone. Breaking records. Furthermore, other countries overseas had to watch it via their own services or purchasing the film on demand. Countries like Russia, India, Australia, and Brazil all noted that they had record buys and streams of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

But let’s bring this back to HBO Max. Because this wouldn’t mean as much if it didn’t have a big boost in subscriptions for the service, right? Except, according to Bloomberg, HBO Max said that week to week, the service got nearly 1.5 million NEW subscribers to HBO Max, beating out all competition, including Disney+ by nearly 2-to-1 (and if you recall they released the first episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier the next day).

So as you can see, The Snyder Cut didn’t just meet expectations, it shattered them. In views, in social media chatter (which has moved onto the #RestoreTheSnyderCut movement), and in reviews.

Many are hoping this is a sign of things to come for Snyder and his vision. We’ll just have to wait and see on that front.

In the meantime, be sure to check out our review of Zack Snyder’s Justice League!
