Borderlands Movie Has Found its Claptrap and Tiny Tina

By Andrew AgressMarch 4, 2021
Borderlands

The upcoming Borderlands movie has cast two of its most important roles. Or perhaps, just the two I remember most for being absolutely chaotic and iconic. Jack Black will take on the role of robotic pal Claptrap, and Ariana Greenblatt will play the wild child Tiny Tina. Directed by Eli Roth, director of Cabin Fever and Hostel, Lionsgate’s adaptation of the video game franchise has a whole host of A-list actors on board.

Rounding out the cast we have Kevin Hart as Roland, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, and Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Tannis. Jack Black is no stranger to video game films, as he recently appeared in both of the newest Jumanji movies. Meanwhile, Ariana Greenblatt may not be a household name (yet) nor may she be recognizable at a quick glance, as she starred as the young Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War in one of the movie’s most iconic scenes. Also, if you haven’t seen the movie, it’s a big spoiler so… check it out at your own risk.

Both Claptrap and Tiny Tina are highly comedic roles, but then again, Borderlands is a series known for its zany and oftentimes dark humor. In casting Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Eli Roth commented on the decision and clearly knows the character well, reported by Digital Spy:

She blew us all away in her audition, and I cannot wait to see her bring the wild, insane and unpredictable Tiny Tina to the big screen. She’s going to blow up on screen like one of Tina’s grenades.

It’s been a big time for video game movies, and also a great time to check out or replay the Borderlands series. The Gearbox Software franchise has three numbered games as well as various spin-offs, including Telltale’s Tales from the Borderlands. Almost exactly a year ago, Borderlands 3 made its arrival to PC on Steam, after console releases the previous fall.

A big fan of Final Fantasy VII, Uncharted, and Metal Gear Solid, Andrew loves great stories and any and all things horror flavored. He also works in the world of interactive theater, its own kind of gaming. Andrew gets his powers from listening to indie folk music and drinking aloe water.
