Demon Slayer: Mugen Train Continues to Pile Up Accolades

By Josh PiedraFebruary 26, 2021

Okay, I think we all get it by now. Demon Slayer is the greatest thing since sliced bread and people are nuts over this franchise. It won anime of the year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards and, oddly, Anime of the Decade on Funimation’s polls.

When the movie came out, it overtook Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name and Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away to become the highest-grossing FILM (not anime film) in Japan’s history. It’s even getting an Academy Awards nomination run in Miami, Florida starting today.

Now, the film can add two more accolades to its growing list.

The film opened up in Australia and New Zealand and did so with authority as it instantly shot to the #1 spot in the rankings. That’s in both the continent and the country. This stat was confirmed by Australia’s top anime distributor, Madman Entertainment in a tweet that can be seen below:

🥳 You did it! #DemonSlayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: #MugenTrain was Australia and New Zealand's number 1 movie on opening day! Book your tickets to see it in cinemas now: 🔥 https://t.co/NGMO7SKDy2 🔥 pic.twitter.com/sucgmyiHB0

The second accolade is that the film has won the Japan Academy Film Prize’s Fan Popularity Award.

What else lies in store? Well, we may not have to wait long to find out as the Demon Slayer manga was recently nominated for the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize.
