Captain Marvel Goes Mystical in Upcoming Story

By Karl SmartJanuary 23, 2021

While the Captain Marvel movie sequel continues to be ever-changing, from Carol Danvers being dropped to bring in Monica Rambeau, to recasting rumors, to nothing changing at all, to the movie being shelved or pushed back, it looks like the comic version is going to change too.

In a recent tweet announcement from the Marvel Official Twitter account, it seems that Carol Danvers is going to address one of her “biggest weaknesses”, that being characters who use magical abilities against her, (Wait, she has weaknesses? First time hearing that… Also notice the similarities between her and Superman?) in a new storyline written by Kelly Thompson (Hawkeye, A-Force, West Coast Avengers, The Girl Who Would Be King, Jessica Jones, and Mr. and Mrs. X) with art by Jacopo Camagni (Strikeforce, Marvel Adventures Spider-Man, and X-Men Blue). While the story will see Carol turns to Doctor Strange in order to train in the Mystic Arts in order to take down OVE, a mystical villain. This transformation will see Carol not only gain mystical powers like Doctor Strange, including having a cost for their use, but Carol will also see a whole new costume for the first time in many years.

Carol’s new costume, which is a very dark version of her 2012 redesign, features a dark hood to give off that mystical look… Because all mystical people wear hoods, apparently. The new design was brainstormed by both Kelly Thompson as Marco Checchetto, the cover artist for the upcoming story arc.

“He was very patient with me as we tried to figure out what this look for her should be,” Thompson told SYFY WIRE of the costume design process with Checchetto. “I think the breakthrough happened when we stopped trying to give her just a regular ‘new look’ that was a variation on things that had come before and instead leaned hard into something wildly different that was story specific and thus not permanent. So this is a story specific costume the same way The Last Avenger ‘Dark Carol’ look was (though for completely different reasons). And Marco is a genius, so I think fans are going to have A LOT of fun with this very unexpected look. At a minimum, I expect to see some great cosplay!”

Captain Marvel currently finds herself in an apocalyptic future in “The New World.” Instead of finding familiar faces to fight alongside, the majority of her allies are dead, with their superhero children carrying on the fight. The fallout of “The New World” will lead directly into this new story arc.

“I have to be a little careful here because this story spins pretty directly out of the fall out from our current arc, so I don’t want to spoil that. But yes, not everything goes Carol’s way in that story, and there’s real loss mixed in there with the win,” Thompson explained. “And it leaves her feeling more vulnerable than ever to magic and characters that can attack her with magic. And Carol’s military mindset especially is not going to see an Achilles’ heel like that and just ignore it – she’s going to look into ways to address that.”

Captain Marvel is one of the strongest – if not the strongest – Marvel Comics superheroes, according to social media. It seems her glimpse into a dark future makes her realize that learning magic is the only way to prevent futures like it from happening. Although considering the volatility of using spells, it won’t be an easy transition for the Marvel powerhouse. But in the end, it probably will be since Carol can do anything from how Marvel likes to write her. Expect the whole new over-powered Captain Marvel, beginning with Captain Marvel #28, which goes on sale in April from Marvel Comics.
