New Sci-Fi Comic Japan Sinks 2020 Available Now on Mangamo App

By Josh PiedraJuly 13, 2020

The sci-fi/disaster original comic Japan Sinks 2020, the modern-day remake manga adaptation of the 1973 disaster novel megahit Japan Sinks, is now available in the U.S. and Canada on the mobile manga subscription service Mangamo.

“The Japan Sinks 2020 original manga on Mangamo reimagines the Netflix anime through a different lens that we hope will spark the imaginations of people around the world,” said Yusuke Sasano, Mangamo co-founder and Head of Business Development and Content Partnerships. “Many of your favorite anime come from manga, so if you’re an anime fan you’ll love digging deeper into these stories through another beloved medium.”

“To produce the Japan Sinks 2020 manga as well as the anime, I drew inspiration from the legendary original Japan Sinks novel to explore new and different story arcs and characters,” said Nori Ueki, co-founder and manga producer for Mangamo. “Sharing these stories in a modern-day context feels more timely than ever.”

“Japan Sinks 2020 debuting on Mangamo allows me to share my art with a global audience,” said Kenichi Watanabe, author of Japan Sinks 2020. “I hope readers everywhere connect with these characters and their stories of resilience in the face of tragedy, adversity and the unknown.”

Japan Sinks 2020 marks Mangamo’s first-ever original manga series and is based on the Netflix Original Anime by famed director Masaaki Yuasa (Devilman Crybaby, Lu Over the Wall).

Mangamo describes the series as follows:

In this sci-fi disaster manga, catastrophic earthquakes devastate Japan and one family’s resolve is tested on a journey of survival through the sinking archipelago as the disastrous shifting of a fault in the Japan Trench places the country in danger of being swallowed by the sea.

New chapters will be released weekly in July and bi-weekly thereafter. The manga was created in partnership between Mangamo, Comicsmart, and Avex. Mangamo has made tech updates since launch including improved loading performance, alphabetized titles on the Browse screen, optimized imagery to boost app speed, and improved chapter loading and latency issues in the manga reader. Mangamo launched on April 15, 2020 and features titles like Arte, Dropkick on My Devil!, To Your Eternity, Fairy Tail, and Reset Game.

Mangamo is currently offering a 30-day free trial for new users. The Netflix Original Anime of the same name by Masaaki Yuasa is also now available, so fans can enjoy the story and characters through different mediums.
