‘Cobra Kai’ Leaves YouTube, Looks for New Streaming Home

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJune 2, 2020

It’s always sad to see a show lose it’s home, especially one as well-written and well-received as Cobra Kai. Airing as a YouTube Original, the show’s third season was not picked up by YouTube and is thus looking for a new home.

But things are looking up. According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Television is fielding offers for where the show could live in the near future, and make new seasons. Sources have said that Netflix and Hulu are top contenders, but whoever gets the contract with have exclusive rights to the show’s reportedly finished third season, and rights to stream the first two as well to help new viewers catch up.

If you’re new to the show, Cobra Kai is a continuation of the Karate Kid, where in the villain Johnny Lawrence re-opens Cobra Kai, the evil dojo that taught kids to mercilessly beat the crap out of one another. However, Lawrence finds as he gets to know more about his less-than-cool students and meets up with his son, his strike-first mantra begins to give way. Meanwhile, Daniel Russo is now a local celebrity, and tries to shut down the dojo that so antagonized him. To say anymore would be to give too much away — it is a show you have to see for yourself.

If you’re wondering why the sudden change in platforms, YouTube Red appears to be dropping a lot of its scripted content in favor of more off-the-cuff stuff, which reflects more of what’s popular on the site as a whole. No matter what platform it ends up on, Cobra Kai is likely to do well and gain even more followers.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
