Steam Breaks Concurrent Users Record Set Over 2 Years Ago

By Austin Douglas FordFebruary 2, 2020

Today, February 2nd, 2020 will live in infamy. Not only is it the first Palindromic date in 909 years and the date of Super Bowl LIV between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs (go Niners!), but it is also the first time that Steam’s Concurrent users broke their own previous record since January 2018.

The news comes way of twitter account Steam Database who reported on the numbers when they tied the previous record of 18,537,490 concurrent users.

.@Steam has broken its record for most concurrently online users that was held for two years. Previous record was 18,537,490 users. It's still increasing!

But there's about 1 million less players actually in-game (≈5.8mil vs ≈7mil two years ago).https://t.co/D6WDHbz0B4

— SteamDB (@SteamDB) February 2, 2020

The total concurrent user number peaked at an astonishing 18,801,944 users at approximately 8:20 AM CST Sunday morning, 14:20UTC, according to SteamDB.

It’s important to note that this isn’t the total number of players in a game, that number reached just shy of 6 million, but instead, reflects the number of users currently online and using the steam platform in some capacity. SteamDB gets their numbers directly from Steam with the SteamKit, an API tool that allows developers of third-party applications to access information freely and do with it what they see fit, so long as it complies with Steams Terms of Service.

The top 10 games at the time of the peak were as follows:

  1. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
  2. Dota 2
  3. PLAYER UNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS
  4. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  5. Grand Theft Auto V
  6. Monster Hunter: World
  7. Football Manager 2020
  8. Rust
  9. Destiny 2
  10. ARK: Survival Evolved

These 10 games made up just over half of the total players at the peak concurrent users, that’s more than 3 million players in these 10 games on Steam alone.

In an age of every publisher having its own storefront, it’s amazing to see numbers high enough to set a record that was made when PUBG was the hottest game around. What do you think of the new record? Let us know in the comments below!

They say everything's bigger in Texas, and Austin is no exception. Barely a 90's kid, Austin longs for the return of platformers, specifically Jak and Daxter, just don't tell him it'll never actually happen. He enjoys stand up comedy, occasionally performing in local scenes around San Antonio and Austin, and playing a myriad of different games. He also has an aggressive obsession with Superman.
