‘Matrix 4’ and ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ Get Same Release Date — Fans Call it Keanu Reeves Day

By Sara Roncero-MenendezDecember 13, 2019

In a weird turn of events, or studios not thinking too hard about the dates of their premieres, both Matrix 4 and John Wick: Chapter 4 will be premiering on the same date, May 21, 2021. Both movies star Keanu Reeves, who has recently been getting a lot of love on the Internet. As such, fans are calling May 21 Keanu Reeves Day.

If you don’t go to the cinema to see #TheMatrix4 and then go straight into a showing of #JohnWick4 the same day then you are doing it all wrong. #KeanuReevesDay pic.twitter.com/QfMf3rRrC6

Now, typically this would mean that one of the studios would pick an alternate day to premiere their movie, so as not to force fans to choose one over the other and potentially lowering their box office pull. However, given the level of attention and hype this is getting over a year away, you have to wonder if this something they could lean into as a marketing gimmick. Theaters could host an event where they play both movies back-to-back for a special price, there could be special pins and posters for purchase, the marketing possibilities are endless.

So the real question is, which movie are you going to see first? Personally, I am going to be queueing up for Matrix 4 but it’s a win-win situation either way.

Matrix 4 and John Wick: Chapter 4 will both premiere in theaters on May 21, 2021.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
