No Sony PlayStation News Conference at the 2019 Tokyo Game Show

Sad news for those looking forward to the annual PlayStation news conference at the 2019 Tokyo Game Show.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has outlined its plans for the upcoming event. While they traditionally have a large presence at the show, they have opted for a slimmed downed model for this year. They’ll still have a booth in the exhibition hall, just smaller. As such, they will host a live show instead of the annual press conference.

Outside of Sony’s appearance at the recent 2019 Gamescom event, the company has been a no show for most of this year and part of last year. Not only did they skip out on E3 2019, but they also canceled their own PlayStation Experience that would have been held during December 2018. Now they’re skipping out on the biggest gaming conference in the PlayStation’s birthplace.

Sony’s booth will also showcase games such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Nioh 2. Sadly, Ghosts of Tsushima will be a no-show once again.

As to why Sony has changed up the format for the event, one can only imagine that they’re not really to reveal their next-gen plans. We already know that the next-gen PlayStation is being worked on, even though Sony hasn’t been as forthcoming as Microsoft has. One can only speculate that they’re waiting until E3 2020 to drop the massive new bomb on us all. Which will likely include showing off a nearly completed PlayStation 5 and an assortment of games.

The gaming industry is at the point of transition with the arrival of the next-generation of consoles. I’m willing to bet Sony just wants to surprise us all, and this silence is a good indication of this. Especially when they’ve been leading this generation of consoles and games, outperforming Microsoft at every turn.

Next year is going to be bonkers.
