Gamescom Opening Night to Feature Announcements From PlayStation, Xbox, and More

By Diego PerezAugust 6, 2019
Death Stranding

This year’s Gamescom is opening with a bang. Geoff Keighley, host of The Game Awards, has announced “Gamescom Opening Night Live,” a show featuring “world premiere content and announcements” from a list of over 15 different publishers.

More than 15 game publishers will premiere new content and make announcements during @gamescom Opening Night Live. An exciting show is coming together for Monday, August 19! Hope you get to tune in and watch the stream! pic.twitter.com/THAv4bvZlm

The list of publishers is extensive. Sony Interactive Entertainment is bringing some news, and it’s nice to see them considering they skipped out on this year’s E3. Xbox Game Studios will be showing off some of their titles, perhaps even some brand new ones. Even Google is joining the fray to tell us more about the upcoming Stadia service before it launches in November.

Both an episode of Inside Xbox and a Stadia Connect will be held on the same day as Gamescom Opening Night Live, so expect some news and reveals before the main event. It’s unclear if they’ll be expanding upon games they’ll reveal during their respective shows at Opening Night Live or if they’re saving some world premieres for the big show. Keighley loves to put on a show, so expect at least one big piece of news to drop during Opening Night Live.

No matter how the show goes, we at least know we’ll get another look at Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, which is set to launch early this November. Not only that but both THQ Nordic and Sega are planning on unveiling completely new projects at Opening Night Live.

Notable omissions from the publisher list include Blizzard and Nintendo, but Blizzard has elected to skip this year’s show to focus on development, and Nintendo has laid out their own plans for showcasing their upcoming titles. Gamescom 2019 is shaping up to be a big one. For all the latest news and reveals coming out of this year’s show, stay tuned to The Outerhaven.

Gamescom Opening Night Live will be streamed live on August 19 at 11 AM PDT/2PM EDT.

When he's not playing video games, Diego's talking about video games, and he does both a lot.
