Borderlands 2 is receiving a free expansion that will bridge the gap between it and Borderlands 3.
Commander Lilith & The Fight For Sanctuary, which leaked earlier this week, is available right now for free. It raises the level cap for experienced players, and new players can boost their characters to level 30 so they can get to the new content immediately. Check out the trailer below.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is currently free with PlayStation Plus, and the game was added to Xbox Game Pass today. That, in combination with the DLC being free, means anyone can jump into new Borderlands content today.
Borderlands 3 will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC (exclusively via the Epic Games Store) on September 13, 2019.
