‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 3 Shows the Tides Turning…For Now

By Sara Roncero-MenendezMay 2, 2019

Everyone’s favorite misogynist dystopia is finally ready to get back to depressing business. If you remember the last season of The Handmaid’s Tale, Offred/June decides to stay behind in Gilead to save her eldest daughter while sending her other child off in order to be safe in Canda. In the new trailer, however, there’s definitely something on the rise:

So, weirdly enough, June is not seen going after her daughter like she said, but in fact rejoining Gilead society. Now, that’s confusing, given that she convinced Serena Joy to give up the baby. How is she going to re-integrate? Is it with the help of Commander Joseph Lawrence, the man who created the Handmaid system but then helps the women get out of the situation?

It seems like a weird message but perhaps it’s an important one. The goal of the novel’s protagonist, and of the first season, was escape and survival. Now, the move is to try and change the system. And weirdly enough, the trailer makes you think that it might actually work, with shots of Serena Joy in a political meetings, Nick helping June, and even June standing before a massive crowd of handmaids.

There’s surprisingly little detail yet about any new cast or any major plot points beyond what we can ascertain in the trailer. Still, while the trailer gives off a hopeful vibe, I know better than to trust this show that has so often broken my heart by killing of characters and settling into deeper and deeper acts of depravity. And given that this hasn’t been marketed as the final season, I’m inclined to trust my instincts.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 is set to premiere on Hulu on June 5, 2019.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
