Makoto Shinkai announced last year that he was working on a brand-new feature film called Tenki no Ko (Weathering With You). While we were given a synopsis of the film, we hadn’t seen any footage of it… until now. Makoto Shinkai and his studio, CoMix Wave, released the first trailer for the film and my GOD is the film gorgeous! Of course, this was to be expected as CoMix Wave have produced some of the most jaw-dropping anime films of our time.

Don’t believe me? Take a look at at the trailer for yourself:

The video also previews the theme song for Weathering With You which brings back the band RADWIMPS. RADWIMPS lent their talent to Shinkai’s previous film Kimi no Na wa (your name.) Given the success of your name., the expectations are set quite high for this film. It seemed that Shinkai learned some lessons with his last film in the realms of storytelling, although, the storytelling wasn’t exactly perfect. Despite the film’s flaws, one could argue that it was Shinkai’s best effort yet next to his other classic 5 Centimeters per Second

MyAnimeList.net describes Weathering With You as follows:

The movie is about a boy and a girl get their destiny baffled during the era where the balance of the weather gets messy. Hotaka Morisaki, a high school student who ran out of the house in the island away from Japan, met Hina Amano, a girl with a mysterious power who can make the weather sunny just by “praying.”

Weathering With You is set to open in Japan on July 19.
