Why I Dislike EA's Origin Service

By Keith MitchellFebruary 14, 2012

So a couple of people responded to why I was not getting Mass Effect 3 on the PC and wanted to know why I was skipping out on the best version of the game. I admit it’s not an easy decision for me but in the end it’s the most logical.

However I didn’t reply back to those messages as I planned on letting it all out right now, so… here I go. I REFUSE to purchase any EA published game that requires Origin. That includes Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3 and even the up coming Syndicate. It’s funny however that EA didn’t require Origin for Star Wars: The Old Republic, I wonder why.

But back to why I won’t install Origin, it’s simple. Why am I going to install a service that basically says it’s going to violate my PC and if I don’t want to be violated that I shouldn’t install the software. So basically EA is saying that they don’t think that getting my money is enough. No, they want to take my money and still screw me, well that ain’t happening. The only one that does that is my wife!

For those saying Origin doesn’t do that, it sure does!

2. Consent to Collection and Use of Data.

You agree that EA may collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer (including the Internet Protocol Address), operating system, Application usage (including but not limited to successful installation and/or removal), software, software usage and peripheral hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you, including online services. EA may also use this information combined with personal information for marketing purposes and to improve our products and services. We may also share that data with our third party service providers in a form that does not personally identify you. IF YOU DO NOT WANT EA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE, TRANSMIT OR DISPLAY THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THE APPLICATION. This and all other data provided to EA and/or collected by EA in connection with your installation and use of this Application is collected, used, stored and transmitted in accordance with EA’s Privacy Policy located at www.ea.com. To the extent that anything in this section conflicts with the terms of EA’s Privacy Policy, the terms of the Privacy Policy shall control.

And yes Valve’s Steam service also collects information but it is only hardware related and they opt you into it. You can choose to decline it and also when they do gather the information tehy make it public. I’m almost 100% sure that Valve does not see nor provide 3rd party companies with your information where EA on the other hand seems dead set that they will. They don’t come out and say they do but when they tell you to not install the game cause they do collect this information it seems like a pretty good bet that they will eventually do it.

So until they revise that crap I will not install any EA titles that require this. So the next time EA starts saying that piracy rate of PC titles is going up or when they start complaining there’s no money on the PC, they need to do a reality check and see what’s really going on. Last time I checked EA we PC folks don’t like software snooping around in our PC’s.

EA origin Suck
