The 10 Most Exciting RPGs to Look Forward to in 2026

By Chris PenwellDecember 5, 2025
2026 RPGs include Code Vein 2 and the next Fire Emblem

2026 is just around the corner, and while the year hasn’t officially kicked off, the RPG lineup is already shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent memory. Fans can expect everything from cozy, character-driven indies like Witchbrook to major heavy hitters such as Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave and Nioh 3. Developers across the industry are pushing new ideas, reimagining beloved series, and delivering ambitious worlds that promise hundreds of hours of adventure. If you’re an RPG fan, 2026 might be your next backlog-breaking year.

With so many RPGs to look forward to, here are the biggest titles already confirmed or expected for 2026.

Code Vein 2

Code Vein 2's bosses look incredible.

Code Vein 2 is the next entry in Bandai Namco’s Soulslike epic franchise. With a cool, gritty anime art style, it stands out in the populated genre. In this sequel, you can drain blood from your foes and gain their abilities in a vampiric Mega Man-like way. This journey has you going through the present and the past to stop the world from a destructive fate; this sounds similar to Bandai Namco’s hit 2025 RPG Digimon Story: Time Stranger, huh?

Nevertheless, you’ll be able to take down mighty beasts and gain their powers when Code Vein 2 is scheduled to release on January 29, 2026 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam). No Switch 2 version has been announced as of the time of writing.

Decapolice

The long-delayed Level-5 RPG Decapolice may finally see a 2026 release. Originally planned for 2023, the game has you play as a newcomer detective named Harvard. In turn-based battles, he takes down crooks (who turn into crime beasts) across a large open world set across both physical and virtual reality. Like any respectable detective, you’ll be searching for clues and solving cases via a detailed case board.

The game has no exact release date yet but is planned for 2026. Despite its long delay, Level-5 seems to be back on track after the successful Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road. It will launch on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC, with an anime releasing around the same time.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is one of few Square Enix 2026 RPGs

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined looks to be a stunning remake

Square Enix is bringing back one of its most beloved Dragon Quest titles when Dragon Quest VII Reimagined launches on February 5, 2026. It features stunning diorama-style visuals similar to Fantasian: Neo Dimension, paired with character designs inspired by Akira Toriyama’s original artwork.

Some fans may be upset that the story has been “streamlined” for a more modern experience. According to the Steam page, “the main story has also been streamlined to make the journey more accessible to all players.” New gameplay additions further refine the classic combat system, making this one of the most anticipated 2026 RPGs.

The Duskbloods

The Duskbloods heads to Switch 2

A surprise announcement for Nintendo Switch 2 owners was The Duskbloods, a new action RPG from Elden Ring developer FromSoftware — and it’s a Switch 2 console exclusive. Featuring a visual style similar to Bloodborne, the game is a PvPvE experience where you battle both players and CPU enemies. “It allows for a broad range of game-design ideas while also letting us leverage our experience designing challenging enemy encounters,” said director Hidetaka Miyazaki in an interview with Nintendo.

You play as Bloodsworn adventurers seeking a legendary treasure called the First Blood. You’ll be summoned to the Twilight of Humanity to compete across different eras and locations for the prize. It launches sometime in 2026.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is one of the most anticipated 2026 RPGs

Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave has the Heroic Games

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave will be the series’ first major outing on Nintendo Switch 2 when it launches in 2026. The game revolves around the Heroic Games, a deadly tournament where the victor is granted a wish. Multiple protagonists offer different perspectives, including Cai, who is fighting for his father’s life.

Not much else is known, but Sothis — a fan favorite from Three Houses — returns in an older form.

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection

Monster Hunter Stories 3 is one of the biggest 2026 RPGs with a big world to explore and large monsters to fight

Launching on March 13, 2026, Monster Hunter Stories 3 continues the beloved monster-taming spin-off series. Featuring a turn-based rock-paper-scissors combat system and a sweeping RPG storyline, this entry follows a world torn between the kingdoms of Azuria and Vermeil.

The conflict escalates when a supposedly extinct Rathalos egg hatches — revealing two Rathalos, one claimed by each nation. The protagonist sets off on their own Rathalos to uncover the truth behind the war and save the monsters caught in the chaos.

You’ll explore a large open world, ride various creatures, and battle iconic monsters across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Nioh 3

Nioh 3 launches in 2026 for PS5 and PC

One of the most anticipated 2026 RPGs is Nioh 3 from Team Ninja. This Soulslike-inspired action RPG has you play as a samurai traveling through vast open fields filled with terrifying yokai.

Combat allows you to swap between samurai and ninja styles, offering multiple ways to approach each fight. Deeply rooted in Japanese folklore, the world and enemies look visually stunning. Nioh 3 launches for PS5 and PC on February 6, 2026.

Crimson Desert
Crimson Desert features a massive, detailed open world with action RPG combat

Pearl Abyss’ long-awaited action RPG Crimson Desert is finally approaching launch, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most ambitious RPGs of 2026. Built by the team behind Black Desert Online, this single-player open-world adventure focuses on narrative, exploration, and physics-driven action.

While Crimson Desert has been delayed multiple times, Pearl Abyss maintains that it is targeting a March 19, 2026 release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. If the game delivers on its promise, it could easily become one of the standout RPGs of the year.

SacriFire

SacriFire looks amazing with its blend of sprites and 3D assets

SacriFire is a pixel-art RPG releasing in Q1 2026. It blends real-time and turn-based combat into a unique hybrid system. Featuring both sprite-based and 3D visuals, its art style resembles the retro-modern look seen in some Square Enix titles.

The developer, Pixelated Milk, promises moral complexity and a story that subverts standard RPG tropes. Composer Motoi Sakuraba — known for Tales of and Dark Souls — is contributing to the soundtrack.

Witchbrook might be a surprise hit in the 2026 RPGs lineup

Witchbrook is a witch or wizard school RPG for 2026

Witchbrook could be one of 2026’s breakout indie hits. This pixel art RPG lets you play as a witch or wizard attending a magical academy. You’ll make friends, find romance, attend classes, brew potions, grow crops, run your own shop, and customize your cottage.

The city of Mossport changes with the seasons, and every NPC follows their own schedule, making the world feel alive. With no combat, the focus is entirely on life simulation, exploration, and personal growth. It launches on Nintendo Switch and PC in 2026.

Honorable Mention – Fable

Fable may release in 2026

After many years, the Fable series finally returns, now under the talented British studio Playground Games. Details are limited, but the game appears to recapture the franchise’s iconic humor. Comedians Matt King and Richard Ayoade are already confirmed to appear.

Hopefully more British comedy stars will join the cast — imagine Alan Carr or Jimmy Carr showing up. Fingers crossed Fable launches in 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. (And who knows? After the Halo PS5 remaster announcement, maybe even a multi-platform surprise.)

Though, if we’re being honest, we aren’t 100% sure if Fable will be released next year, given delays and uncertainty that surrounds the game.
