The Tribeca Festival returns to New York City this June and once again has some gaming selections on offer. Particularly noteworthy is a panel on Final Fantasy VII. Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Yoshinori Kitase, producer of Rebirth and director of the original game, will talk about reimagining the classic title.
But for fans of other games, the Tribeca Festival has plenty more. Seven indie games will feature in the NYC festival. Attendees can check out demos for these titles for free at the Tribeca Games Gallery. The seven games are as follows:
- Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure
- Blue Prince
- darkwebSTREAMER
- Goodnight Universe
- Neva
- Skate Story
- Thank Goodness You’re Here!
I’m particularly curious about darkwebSTREAMER, an indie horror game that has received a lot of press lately. The unique title has the player take on the role of a streamer to find increasingly disturbing material to show their viewers in a procedurally generated simulation of the dark web.
But the entire list has a great deal of variety, from the puzzle gameplay of Arranger and Blue Prince to the comedy slapstick of Thank Goodness You’re Here! Narrative fans may enjoy Goodnight Universe while those who go all in for visuals may appreciate Neva. And for people who want to become a skateboarding demon? Skate Story serves that niche.
While focusing mostly on films, the Tribeca Festival has had great game offerings in recent years. Last year, it held a top-notch panel with Sam Lake and Mike Flanagan all about Alan Wake 2. A tough act to follow, for sure. But this year’s panel, entitled From Fire to Firaga: Remaking Final Fantasy VII, may give it a run for its money. We loved Final Fantasy VII Rebirth here at The Outerhaven, granting it a perfect score in our review.

But we’re far from the only ones who love Final Fantasy VII. As such, the panel will likely be quite popular. You can get tickets for the June 14th panel starting on Tuesday, April 30th. And for those who just want to check out the indie goodness of the game demos, those will be free to play from June 12-16th at Pier 57.
