We finally had the Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct of the year, and it revealed some new information for the movie. The trailer inside the Nintendo Direct focused on Yoshi, but there are still more things that were explained afterwards.
One interesting thing about the actual movie trailer is that there weren’t a lot of Mario Galaxy moments. We saw locales reminiscent of Mario Odyssey and Super Mario World, with even a reference to Yoshi’s Island packed in, but nothing indicative of Super Mario Galaxy. That means they are keeping the Super Mario Galaxy things a lot more underwraps for the main movie, or a trailer closer to the launch period will have those elements.
I do appreciate that Shigeru Miyamoto explained he focused the trailer on Yoshi because of the response he received following the first trailer. One thing to note is that the first Super Mario Bros. movie ended with a post-credit scene of Yoshi’s egg cracking. So odds are fans were looking for Yoshi in the first trailer due to those who watched the post-credit scene wondering if it mattered to Super Mario Galaxy at all.
The end of the Nintendo Direct was Miyamoto moving the screen to Chris Meledandri from Illumination. Melendandri explained that the actual animation and story were already done for the movie and that all that is left is syncing the sound for post-production. Audio editing is a process, and they did note that they are working more closely with Nintendo for the music in the movie. Hopefully, that means we get more Nintendo music and fewer pop song needle drops that don’t fit. That was one problem I had with the first movie was the awkward songs that they added for needle drops that didn’t fit the world or even the moments they were dropped in.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will premiere in theaters April 1st, 2026.
