The Legend of Aang The Last Airbender Gets Huge Change In Release

By Todd BlackDecember 23, 2025
The Legend of Aang The Last Airbender

I have a deep connection with the Avatar animated franchise. Both the original series and its sequel series inspired me to become the writer I am today. So, when Avatar Studios was formed and confirmed it would be continuing the story in multiple ways, I was excited. One of those ways was via the movie The Legend of Aang The Last Airbender, which would build upon the story of Aang from the first series and further tie it into what came after. It was meant to arrive next October in theaters, and many were excited. After today’s news, though, that will change.

As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, The Legend of Aang The Last Airbender won’t be in theaters at all, but instead, will debut exclusively on Paramount+. That’s not all, though, as the third series in the saga, Avatar: Seven Havens, will now also be exclusive to Paramount+.

Naturally, those at Paramount+ are trying to spin this into a “positive” thing:

“The Avatar Universe has captivated audiences for two decades, and Paramount+ is proud to be the exclusive streaming home for its beloved animated incarnation,” said Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+. “These additions, alongside The Legend of Korra and the original series, solidify Paramount+ as the destination for the animated Avatar Universe.”

…except, there are plenty of people who don’t have the service, and won’t want to get it JUST to watch this series. In many ways, it might handicap it right from the start, which could ensure that the series doesn’t continue beyond what’s already being created.

While I usually don’t ask for “fan backlash” to try and change things…this would be a good example of doing that for the right reasons.
