There have been a lot of great and unique titles in the gaming year 2025, and hopefully, that’ll carry over into 2026. With the end of the year upon us, now is the time to look back at things and learn more about the games that you might not have paid much mind to at first. One such title is The Hundred Line Last Defense Academy, which was a unique collaboration between Kazutaka Kodaka (who made the famous Danganronpa franchise) and Kotaro Uchikoshi (who had written many a fan-favorite tale, including AI: The Somnium Files).
The game was fascinating on many fronts, including the fact that it had over 100 endings! Yes. Really. There was a lot of love put into this game, and between fans and critics in places like Metacritic and Steam, you can see that the reception has been good. In an interview with Inverse, Uchikoshi made it clear that when he works on a game, he puts his all into it, and there will never be any AI use:
“I consider every game I’ve made in the past 27 years to be my magnum opus. Hundred Line is certainly one of the most significant among them. Perhaps one day it will be remembered as ‘the last large-scale epic written entirely without the help of AI.’ Maybe even in the history of humanity, it could be one of the final works created purely by human hands. After humanity goes extinct, perhaps the surviving AIs will display it in the Smithsonian.”
That might seem like an odd thing to say, but it’s clear he loved working on The Hundred Line Last Defense Academy, and there are developers, including some big-name ones, who have been flirting with using generative AI more and more. Thankfully, it seems as though some developers are more than willing to do everything themselves, and that’s why both Kodaka and Uchikoshi love their newest game and hope that more people play it as time goes on.
(Seriously, you should try it, they almost went bankrupt doing this game! That’s how much love and care they put into it!!!)
