Ubisoft made some surprising announcements during Gamescom 2025, revealing new projects for The Division franchise. The reveals included The Division 2: Survivors and The Division Resurgence, two games that left many fans wondering what Ubisoft’s overall strategy is for the series, especially after last year’s cancellation of The Division: Heartland.
The Division 2: Survivors is being described as a fresh take on the survival-extraction genre. Despite the name, this isn’t a brand-new game but a new mode being built directly into The Division 2, scheduled for release in 2026. The project is being led by Magnus Jansén, one of the creative veterans from the early days of The Division. Ubisoft says that community involvement will be at the heart of its development, with Executive Producer Julian Gerighty emphasizing transparency and player input as key parts of the journey.
Then there’s The Division Resurgence, a free-to-play mobile RPG shooter MMO that’s coming to iOS and Android. Unlike Survivors, this is a completely separate title and will fill in a narrative gap between the events of the first Division and The Division 2. Ubisoft says the story takes place several months after the original game and is designed to expand on the series’ lore.
A closed beta test is planned to start this September 2025.
The future of the mainline series is also still in the works. Ubisoft has long since confirmed that The Division 3 is in development, although details remain scarce. It’s expected to be a big part of the franchise’s tenth anniversary, but fans will be waiting for a while before hearing anything more concrete.
It’s honestly hard not to feel a little lost with all of this. On one hand, The Division 2: Survivors looks like Ubisoft is finally bringing back the survival experience that players have been asking for. On the other hand, The Division Resurgence is a completely separate free-to-play mobile title that seems aimed at a different audience. Combine that with Heartland being canceled after four years of development and the vague mention of The Division 3 still lurking in the background, and it becomes tough to understand exactly what Ubisoft’s plan for this series really is.
Meanwhile, I haven’t played The Division 2 since the game came out. I wasn’t exactly the biggest fan of it and felt like ti was more of an expansion to the first game. However, after seeing all the updates to the game, I’ve been thinking about diving back into it. Perhaps now is as good as anything to see what’s been changed.
