Square Enix has officially revived one of its most celebrated RPGs with the release of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, is now available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.
Check out the launch trailer.
This release gives players two distinct ways to experience the classic, while the enhanced version modernizes the game with updated visuals, a redesigned interface, voice acting, new dialogue, and quality-of-life upgrades like autosave and fast-forward. For fans who want the experience exactly as they remember it, the classic version includes the 1997 original complete with the War of the Lions translation, preserving the story and presentation that made it a cornerstone of the genre.
Behind the revival is a team that brings together veteran creators and a new generation of talent. Returning staff include Director Kazutoyo Maehiro, Art Director Hiroshi Minagawa, and Yasumi Matsuno, whose original script and scenario work defined the world of Ivalice. They’re joined by Producer Shoichi Matsuzawa and Co-Director Ayako Yokoyama, who helped steer the project toward modern players while respecting the foundation laid nearly three decades ago.
The cast brings the story to life in new ways, with Joe Pitts as Ramza Beoulve, Gregg Lowe as Delita Heiral, Hannah Melbourn as Agrias, Timothy Watson as Cidolfus, Harry McEntire as Mustadio, and Ben Starr as Dycedarg. Square Enix also included cameos from Cody Christian and Briana White, reprising their Final Fantasy VII Remake roles as Cloud and Aerith.
Square Enix marked the launch with a livestream hosted by Jesse Cox, featuring cast interviews, and a special roundtable discussion, Behind the Voices – Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, which dives deeper into the process of adapting one of gaming’s most iconic stories for a new era.
We recently reviewed Final Fantasy Tactics -The Ivalice Chronicles, scoring it with 4.5 out of 5 stars, praising its faithful revival of the original while celebrating the quality-of-life additions that make it approachable for modern audiences. We felt the new voice work added welcome depth to an already powerful story, and the choice between the enhanced and classic versions ensures both newcomers and veterans get the experience they’re looking for. While some UI quirks and pacing issues carried over, they did little to dampen what we considered one of the best tactical RPGs available today.
Not only is this a fantastic homage of the title that defined tactic RPGs, despite what some people would say, it’s a great way for new fans to experience the game and see why Final Fantasy Tactics is so beloved.
