Shigeru Miyamoto Teases The “Fun” Of Super Mario Galaxy Movie

He's confident the sequel will match the original.
By Todd BlackNovember 9, 2025

One of the big surprises from the Nintendo Direct in September was the announcement of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The film has a big mountain to climb, as it not only has to pay tribute to what many feel is one of the greatest Mario games ever, but it has to attempt to match the success of its predecessor, which grossed over 1.3 billion dollars at the box office. The good news for it, though, is that not only is Illumination animating it once again, but Shigeru Miyamoto was there to ensure the quality was maintained.

Miyamoto did an interview about various topics with Japanese magazine Casa Brutus, which was translated by VGC, and he talked about why the first animated Mario film worked so well:

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie was possible because so many people took action and worked together. As a producer, I tried to make sure the team functioned smoothly. Many of the people involved said they’d like to work on the next project as well, so I guess that means we succeeded to some extent?”

As for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Miyamoto is playing coy on some things, but assures fans it will be “fun” to watch:

“The setting for the next movie is, just as the title says, the galaxy — that’s all I can really say. We’re in the final stages of production now, but I think it’s going to be fun. I usually just say, ‘I’ll keep working on it until it becomes fun,’ so that alone should tell you how confident I am (laughs).”

The movie drops next April, and it will likely help further spearhead Nintendo’s efforts on the movie front.
