Announced in its latest earnings report, Sony’s PlayStation 5 has sold 84.2 million consoles globally as of September 30, 2025 with around 3.9 million of those consoles being sold in the past three months. Even amidst a price increase in several regions, including in the United States, the system continues to keep pace with its predecessor the PlayStation 4 in a similar time frame. Currently, the PS5 is only two million units behind (86 million) the PS4 in lifetime sales, which is an incredible feat especially considering the console has remained at its original price or higher in its lifetime so far.
The big announcement also comes in a moment where Sony themselves in interviews and even via Mark Cerny are already hinting at what comes next with project Amethyst and the eventual PlayStation 6.
According to a statement from Sony CFO Line Tao during the most recent earnings call, the PlayStation 5 is just now at the halfway point of its lifecycle.
Our view is that compared to conventional console lifecycles. Looking at the PS4 lifecycle, it seems to be getting longer and longer. Especially the PS4, which was launched in 2013, and it’s been over a decade since then, but there are many active users enjoying the console… So from that perspective, we believe that the PS5 is only in the middle of the journey, and we are really planning to expand it even further.
This leaves the door open for the PS6 to still come out in the planned window of 2027-2028 and PS5 owners could still benefit from receiving new releases many years into, if not virtually the entirity of “next-gen.”
The PlayStation 5 Still Has Many More Years Left
Sony also made headlines this week by giving the PlayStation Portal full cloud streaming without having to be connected to the PS5 and the ability to stream games you own with a PlayStation Premium subscription. Making the device viable as a true portable machine that can play PS5 games like the high selling Ghost of Yotei, which has now achieved 3.3 Million in sales since launch.
Whether you already own a PS5 or are looking at perhaps purchasing one, at least the runway is there for you to get many more years out of it in the future. Speaking of the future, Sony also announced a State of Play featuring games from Japan/Asia that may feature more games of interest for current owners or prospective buyers alike.
