I wanted to check out this show due to the premise/synopsis that I read on it over on MyAnimeList. I felt that it would make a pretty good comedy so I said “why not?” and added to my Plan to Watch list. Now that the show is out, just how funny is Boku no Tonari ni Ankoku Hakaishin ga Imasu (A Destructive God Sits Next to Me)?

First Episode Synopsis
Seri Koyuki is the main protagonist. He sits in a classroom listening to his lecture when all of a sudden, Kabuto Honodori bursts in late soaking wet carrying a dog with him. Kabuto claims to be some reincarnation of some past mythical warrior and that the dog was Cerberus in another life. He goes on his long rant about his backstory and how his eyepatch protects the seal which hides a major demon’s power. Of course, the teacher gives 0 F’s and takes the puppy away and tells Kabuto to go change his clothes.
Okay, I will admit that the show started off pretty well… then it did something which caused me to turn it off completely… it did this thing where one minute you’re looking at normal-drawn characters, then five seconds later they’re chibis on polka dot (or other random generic anime-style) backgrounds trying to do stupid slapstick. You know the type… really fast, overexaggerated speaking, usually yelling at each other, pounding on one another… that sort of stuff.
At that point, I turned the show off and dropped it.
Worth Watching?
NO – Unless you are a fan of this style of humor, then I would say that this show gets a hard pass on it. This show has an interesting premise which is why I chose to watch it in the first place but the execution wasn’t there. It was almost giving me a headache trying to keep up what was happening on screen.
In short, this show was trying WAY too hard to be funny and it ended up becoming just a giant mess. The only thing I liked about the show was the initial opening scene and the show’s OP, which is kind of catchy but man… it could seriously use some bass in it as it did feel a bit flat and low energy. Still catchy, though. I’ve hated shows before and liked the opening because music is music no matter which way you slice it. If anything, give the opening theme a chance and pass on the rest.
Again… unless this is your style of comedy. If so, have at it. You’ll get more than your bargain’s worth here.
