Nintendo Switch 2 Pricing Gets Surprising Support From EA Founder

He also thinks the console will sell incredibly well.

As we’ll discuss in an upcoming episode of the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast, there are still people out there hating on The Big N for the current price of the Nintendo Switch 2 and its games. It’s ironic that this is being called out, as Xbox has just announced a massive set of price hikes for its systems and games. However, that’s not to say that everyone is angry with Nintendo. Trip Hawkins is the man behind Electronic Arts, and while talking with Medium, he noted that he feels the Switch 2’s price is fine and that the console will still sell incredibly well:

We’re not in Kansas anymore, and Nintendo brands are not just for kids. Because of generational advances, many of the first generation of children who played on the NES are now in their 40s and 50s, and they have kids of their own. Because Nintendo has massive brands and happens to be one of the rare brands that appeal to all people of all ages, it might very well make sense to price the console for these groups.

As a function of play hours and their value, Nintendo’s prices are perfectly reasonable. I fully expect Switch 2 to exceed 100 million units sold in its lifetime, just like its predecessor. This will be the 5th Nintendo platform to exceed 100 million (DS, Switch, GameBoy, Wii, Switch 2) and every one of these has been family-oriented. Sony’s PS1, PS2 and PS4 are the only others in history to sell this well.

He’s not wrong in that things are looking good for the Nintendo Switch 2 on the sales front. Based on the pre-order bonanza we endured a little bit ago, projections state it could be the best-selling launch in gaming history! So long as the game quality holds up, there’s no reason to think it won’t do well over its lifetime.
