Nihon Falcom Is Bringing Xanadu Back With Kyoto Xanadu

At the Partner Nintendo Direct this morning, Nihon Falcom finally showed us the new Tokyo Xanadu project they had in the works with Kyoto Xanadu.

Kyoto Xanadu has two types of gameplay. It had the platforming and side-scrolling that were present in Xanadu, the first Xanadu project title that was released in 1985. It also has action RPG combat as you fight the big bosses of the tower you climb. The action RPG combat looks similar to the combat in the last Xanadu project title, Tokyo Xanadu. Falcom seems to be adding elements of the old Xanadu games into the newer ones. This is going to be a real treat.

Based on what we know from the small snippet we see, it looks like there is an alternate world where Kyoto, not Tokyo, is the capital of Japan. In this world is the Great Labryinth: Xanadu. You play as Rei, the man with two swords, as he traverses the labyrinth.

This game, according to the Kyoto Xanadu website, will be released for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. It has a release window of Summer 2026.
