One of the biggest questions of the gaming industry over the last few years was “When would Nintendo release its new console?” By all accounts and reports, it would be released sometime in 2024, but The Big N didn’t do that. Instead, they waited until 2025 to fully unveil and release the Nintendo Switch 2, and it worked out quite well for them. However, even with the sales success it’s had on both the hardware and software side, many people still wonder, “Why did they wait so long to release it?” The answer may come in a new report from Bloomberg.
The site talked with people “close” to Nintendo, and according to their sources, the teams making their exclusive titles asked for more time to get them done, and done right:
“Nintendo repeatedly pushed back plans for the Switch 2’s launch after its designers asked for more time to perfect the games that would accompany the new hardware”.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because Nintendo has done that many times in the past, including with the release of Breath of the Wild, which was a dual release on the Wii U and Switch because of how long it took to get it “just right.” Nintendo is famous for delaying games versus releasing them in a broken state, like certain other rival publishers have done in recent years.
According to Bloomberg, those in charge “decided that aiming for perfection was more important” than just getting the Nintendo Switch 2 out earlier, and that was indeed a good call. Despite certain fan “feelings” on it, Mario Kart World has sold over 6 million units since the system’s launch, and Donkey Kong Bananza has not only sold well based on initial numbers, but is a “Game of the Year” contender.
More exclusives are on the way, and if Nintendo’s strategy for quality over quantity continues to hold, the sales will continue to follow.
