When we did our most recent episode of the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast, we had a blast talking about the Nintendo Switch 2, what we’ve enjoyed about it, and what we thought the immediate future held for it. However, the most dominating part of the conversation in many respects was about how well the console was selling. Because, you know, it sold a LOT in its opening four days! 3.5 million, to be precise. During that podcast, I wondered how much it had done in the United States and Japan, which famously had trouble locking down pre-orders. Well, now we know that answer.
First, Japan. According to Insider Stealth, the Nintendo Switch 2 sold basically 950K in Japan in just the first three days. Plus, he revealed that the sales from the My Nintendo Store weren’t counted here, so it’s likely well over a million right now. For context, that OG Switch sold 330K in its first three days in Japan back in 2017:
Switch 2 had the biggest video game hardware launch ever in Japan, selling 947,931 units in 3 days.

Do recall that Japan had 2.2 million pre-order requests on the Nintendo Store service, meaning that there is PLENTY of people who still need the console in the nation, and Nintendo will likely try to fulfill that demand as quickly as possible.
As for the United States, the Switch 2 did even better, with over 1.1 million units sold in its launch week. Plus, like Japan, they didn’t include the online Nintendo Store purchases. So, again, it could be much higher, and The Big N will want to try and fulfill this demand, too:
Switch 2 set a new all-time launch week unit sales record for video game hardware in the US, with over 1.1 million units sold.

The record was previously held by PlayStation 4.

As the posts note, these are both new all-time records, and they are ones that will be tough to beat. Plus, for all we know, the Nintendo Switch 2 could be close to or over 5 million right now, as more sales have definitely happened in the last few days.
