The end of the year is literally days away, and that means that many people will “take stock” to see what has happened in 2025 in one form or another. One of the biggest things you’ll see is the “best-selling games of the year” lists, which is what GameIndustry.Biz did, as it compiled some infographics breaking down how things went down in the three main “gaming regions” of the world. In Japan, Mario Kart World (read my review!) dominated, with physical copies alone selling over 2.5 million units, as noted by another source on Twitter.
Here’s the full Top 10 best-selling list for Japan:
1) Mario Kart World
2) Pokemon Legends Z-A
3) Monster Hunter Wilds
4) Pokemon Legends Z-A Switch 2 Edition
5) Super Mario Party Jamboree
6) Donkey Kong Bananza
7) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
8) Minecraft: Switch Edition
9) Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake
10) Donkey Kong Country Returns HD
A very “Nintendo-centric” list, wouldn’t you say? I’d argue there are some surprises on that list, including Dragon Quest not being hired, given the success of the previous entry in the remake trilogy.
Another thing to consider here is that this does NOT include digital sales. As we covered earlier, the Switch 2 has crossed 3 million units sold in Japan, so it’s likely a bit higher.
This also adds to how well the game is doing worldwide, as it had over 10 million units sold a while back. Japan is showing out for Nintendo and the Switch 2, and that’s likely to continue in 2026.
